Naomi Watts, Frank Grillo and Bobby Cannavale are all set to star in the period coming-of-age family drama “Once Upon a Time in Staten Island” from Blumhouse Productions and Man in a Tree Productions.
The story is set in the summer of 1982 and has, as its backdrop, the release of “Rocky III”. The story tells of an average teen who embarks on a quest in his Rocky Balboa-obsessed town that swirls in his family members (Watts and Grillo are his parents).
James DeMonaco, who created “The Purge” franchise which starred Grillo and is setup at Blumhouse, wrote and will direct the coming-of-age feature which marks a major tone and genre shift for him.
Lucius Hoyos, Jonah Hauer-King, River Alexander and Chase Vacnin star in the film and production begins later this month. Jason Blum and Sebastien K. Lemercier are producing.
