Martin Scorsese’s and Netflix’s big-budget drama “The Irishman” is set to get a theatrical release after all – in China.
STX Entertainment and Media Asia will distribute the film in the country as part of a previously negotiated deal over distribution rights to the film which stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. STX will also partner to handle streaming rights there.
In Cannes two years ago, STX famously offered a record-breaking $50 million to take international rights to the film. Questions quickly arose as to whether the rights were free and clear.
Ultimately the film ended up at Netflix which will premiere it worldwide, though the U.S. and U.K. will get a very limited theatrical run.
