MoviePass Now Restricted To Two Films

A week ago came the news that in an effort to stay solvent, movie ticketing subscription service MoviePass opted not to proceed with a $14.95 price hike. Instead, it kept itself restricted to a $9.95 subscription plan. However, its one movie ticket a day plan was thrown out the window – replaced by three movie tickets a month one.

Now comes a new wrinkle according to The New York Post. The MoviePass service went down again on Friday evening (third weekend in a row), and since then subscribers are now stuck with a new problem – each day, they only get two movie choices.

Essentially it means customers trying to check in to movies for theaters that don’t offer e-ticketing options (ie. most of them) are forced to choose between only two movies. Most were given the option of either “Slender Man” or “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” while others had “The Spy Who Dumped Me” or “Slender Man” instead. Additionally, the showtimes available for purchase are limited. The paper tried using their MoviePass at AMC Empire 25 in Times Square, but the only ‘Fallout’ showtimes available were 2:30pm and 10:45pm.

MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe tells the paper: “Unfortunately, in order to stay financially stable we’ve had to curtail the service. We had to right the ship as far as the amount of money we were burning. This has been a challenging time for us and our customers. We’re just trying to save our service to be able to be available long term.” Lowe confirms the two movies available could change with each day.

It means even if you find your movie available, it might not be on at a time convenient for you. On the upside the service has seemingly removed surge pricing. Shares of MoviePass parent company Helios and Matheson hit an all-time low of 4.8 cents on Friday.
