“Crazy Rich Asians” Gets A Strong Start

Movie News

It didn’t break any records or perform so well it’ll start a whole new trend, but the old-fashioned rom-com formula meets full Asian cast of “Crazy Rich Asians” worked very well at the U.S. box-office this weekend. Opening earlier than most on Wednesday, the film pulled in an estimated $34 million for the five day and $25 million in the regular Friday-Sunday slot where it took the top spot.

That has to be an outcome those involved should be very happy with as no-one was quite sure how the film would perform. Helped by rave critical reviews and an A CinemaScore, the film has little competition for the next few weeks and so is expected to have long legs.

Giant prehistoric shark film “The Meg” also surprised in that it dropped only 54% in its second weekend to an estimated $21 million – impressively holding onto more of an audience than many expected. The movie is doing gangbusters overseas, and the worldwide total already sits at $314 million after just over a week of release.

In third came the Mark Wahlberg-led “Mile 22”. Designed as the hopeful start of a gritty franchise, reviews were dire and the film pulled in an estimated $13.6 million – not a great start and the second weakest opening of a Berg/Wahlberg project so far.

The Ice Age drama “Alpha” surprised critically, drawing quite good reviews in spite of a lackluster marketing campaign. Sadly audiences didn’t care, the film earned just $10.5 million in its opening weekend – not great for a film costing around $50 million.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and “BlacKkKlansman” both continued to perform strongly and held well, with ‘Fallout’ already passing the $500 million worldwide mark.
