Disney and Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is on track for an impressive $82 million opening weekend according to Friday early estimates. That puts it in the upper range of forecasts which were in the $70-85 million range floated earlier this week.
The Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly-led superhero team-up pulled in a solid $34 million opening day which includes $11.5 million in Thursday night previews. While the critics have warmed to it, the audience hasn’t so much with the film nabbing an A- CinemaScore – one of the weaker marks for a Marvel film and on par with “The Incredible Hulk” and “Thor: Dark World”.
Also out this weekend was “First Purge” which follows up its $14 million haul on Wednesday and Thursday with a further $18 million over the Friday-Sunday – not bad for a film that cost just $13 million to make. In limited release, Annapurna’s critically raved about “Sorry to Bother You” did an excellent $43,400 per screen average which is one of the highest of the year to date.
“Incredibles 2” is looking to come in second with $32 million followed by “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” in third with $31 million, and “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and “Uncle Drew” battling for fifth and sixth place with a little over $7 million each.
